Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of Tenerife forward Ayoze Perez, Sky Sports has reported.

Newcastle’s St. James’ Park

The 20-year-old last season scored 16 goals in 34 games for the Spanish second division side and has spent the entirety of his short career at the club. Perez made his debut for the Canary Islands outfit in 2012, having come through the youth academy at Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez.

He joins the Magpies with barely more than 50 games under his belt and 17 goals, netting once in 16 appearances in his first season in the Tenerife first team, when the club were in the Spanish third tier.

“I'm very happy to be here to start this new adventure,” Perez told Newcastle’s official website. “I'm very eager for it to begin and I'm very pleased to play for this magnificent club. Any football player would be interested in playing for such a club and I will earn my position to get in the first team.”

Perez will be competing with the likes of Papiss Cisse for a place in Alan Pardew’s thoughts, while Newcastle were the lowest scoring team in the top half of the Premier League last season. They netted 43 times in 38 games, two fewer than Stoke City.
