Liverpool and Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has said he never contemplated the possibility of missing the World Cup after his recent knee injury threatened to derail his plans this summer, according to Sky Sports.

Suarez underwent a minor surgical procedure in order to give himself the best chance of being fit in Brazil. The surgery has been considered a success and now the Premier League top scorer is on the road to recovery as he steps up his return to full training.

Uruguay are keen to not rush their talisman back and jeopardise his whole World Cup but will be hoping the scorer of 31 goals last season will be fit and firing, with the player feeling confident of being ready for Brazil.

Suarez said: “Emotionally, I’ve felt fine; psychologically, I’ve been spectacular.

“At no time did I feel pressured, at no time have I felt sad because at no point did I think there was a chance of me missing the World Cup. The thought never went through my mind.”

Uruguay’s first game is on Saturday as they face Costa Rica before meeting England four days later.

And while Suarez is confident of playing a big part in his country’s search for glory, he could not give a definitive answer as to when he will be fully ready.

He added: “What you don’t know is how the knee will react.

“Today I could say to you: ‘Yeah, I’ll make it to the first game’. Or: ‘No, I prefer to wait for the second or the third.’”
