Chelsea are trying to put in place a deal for Cesc Fabregas that would mean his former club Arsenal could miss out on a payment for their old captain, the Daily Telegraph is reporting.

Cesc Fabregas

Fabregas left the Gunners back in 2011 for Barcelona but looks set to leave the Spanish giants with Chelsea in talks to sign the midfielder - and they are looking to trump their London rivals.

Arsene Wenger passed on the club’s first option to buy back the Spanish midfielder meaning the path is clear for Chelsea to make their move. While the Blues would prefer to not pay a percentage of the transfer fee to their Premier League foes it is not thought to be a deal breaker on any transfer.

Barcelona sealed the capture of Fabregas for an initial £24.5m with the player also paying Arsenal £880,000 each year of his contract - in addition to Barcelona paying £4.4m if Fabregas won two La Liga titles and a Champions League in the first five years back at the club.

Currently the overall cost of the deal stands at just over £28m and Barcelona have put a £30m price tag on the playmakers head. However, Chelsea want to pay £3m less than their asking price, meaning their North London opponents could miss out on any other payments.

Fabregas joined Arsenal as a teenager and made his debut at the age of 16. He went on to captain the team, taking over from William Gallas, before returning to Barcelona.
