Aston Villa set to sign Cole

Aston Villa are poised to make their second signing of the summer, with former Chelsea and Liverpool winger Joe Cole having undergone a medical on Monday evening, reports the Birmingham Mail.

Joe Cole

Cole is set to join Philippe Senderos in moving to Villa Park, with the Swiss international defender having joined on a free transfer on Thursday after leaving Valencia. With the club having been put up for sale, Villa boss Paul Lambert is unable to spend money on transfers, meaning that he can only sign players on free transfers.

He has already missed out on Jack Colback, one supposed target, with the midfielder instead joining Newcastle United from arch rivals Sunderland. Joleon Lescott and Rio Ferdinand, who have both become free agents this summer, have also been linked.

Lambert is looking for a playmaker to add his squad, and he believes that Cole fits the bill. He and his representatives have held positive talks with the West Midlands club, and he is expected to become a Villa player in the coming days.

The 32-year-old was released by West Ham United at the end of last season after spending a year and-a-half with the club; his second spell at Upton Park. He found regular first-team opportunities hard to come by, with Stewart Downing and Matt Jarvis preferred in the wide areas.
