Italy manager Cesare Prandelli has conceded that his side must improve ahead of their opening World Cup match against England on Saturday, Sky Sports has reported.

The Euro 2012 finalists have struggled for form in the run-up to the tournament, a sequence of results which included an embarrassing draw with minnows Luxembourg. And after seeing his side perform in the warm-up matches, Prandelli admits there is still work to do before they take to the field at the Arena Amazonia in Manaus.

“We are not sharp enough yet,’ said Prandelli. ‘We have done the physical work, trained hard and are in good shape. But we know we must improve before we start the tournament against England. We can improve and we will improve. Character-wise, the team will not disappoint and we will fight for the shirt and for every ball.”

Prandelli is looking to guide Italy to their fifth World Cup triumph, but find themselves in arguably the toughest group, with Costa Rica and Uruguay also in Group D along with England. After the competition, he is set to resign in favour of a return to club management.
