Fabregas set to complete shock Chelsea move

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas is to join Chelsea this week, according to The Daily Mail.

Fabregas has been told he can leave Barcelona, and has previously expressed an interest in returning to England. His former club Arsenal had a buy-back option for the Spanish international, but chose not to exercise it, leaving Chelsea free to make their move.

Thanks to the eight years he spent with the Gunners, the 27-year-old Catalan qualifies as a homegrown player under Premier League quota rules; another factor that makes him an extremely desirable transfer target for boss Jose Mourinho.

Fabregas’ creative spark could be key to Chelsea’s title ambitions – in Barcelona’s opening La Liga game against Levante last season he was credited with five assists in the 7-0 win. He can also chip in with goals too, with 35 Premier League strikes to his name from his time at Arsenal.

Comments overheard between Barcelona stopper Gerard Pique and Spainish national team manager Vicente Del Bosque started the transfer speculation last week. A fee of £28 million is the apparent price for the midfielder, with Mourinho rumoured to be keen to tie up the deal before the World Cup gets underway later this week.
