Colback Newcastle transfer sparks war of words
Jack Colback joined Newcastle United yesterday from bitter rivals Sunderland, and the manner of his departure has sparked an angry reaction from his former club, reports The Daily Mail.
The 24-year-old midfielder had spent 16 years with the Black Cats, but has walked away from the club and joined their fiercest rivals, with Sunderland not entitled to any compensation.
An official statement from Sunderland claimed that the manner of Colback’s departure had ‘left a bitter taste’, especially after they claim to have offered him contract terms that matched his requests.
Negotiations had been underway before the end of the last season, in which Colback played a significant part. He scored in the penultimate game, a victory over relegation rivals West Bromwich Albion which confirmed the Black Cats Premier League status. But the talks never resumed.
After the deal was confirmed, Sunderland posted a series of pictures on Twitter of Colback celebrating his goal at St James’ Park in the north east derby in February, in a move sure to stoke the passions.
Colback, who himself offered only kind words towards his former club, had the opportunity to join Aston Villa or West Ham, but instead chose to join Newcastle, the team he supported as a child.
