Arsenal return for Vela

Arsenal appear to be ready to activate the buy back option of former striker Carlos Vela and land the Mexican on the cheap according to the Real Sociedad president, reports the Daily Mail.

Jokin Aperribay confirmed that Arsenal would be bringing the Mexican forward back to the Emirates after selling him back in 2012 – for as little as £3.5m thanks to the clause in his contract.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a more than fruitful campaign with Sociedad, scoring 16 goals and adding a further 12 assists in his 34 La Liga appearances last year.

Vela has not been selected as part of the Mexican squad for their assault on the World Cup in Brazil this summer, meaning Arsene Wenger will be signing a player with fresh legs for the start of the season.

The striker signed for the club originally back in 2006 as a 17-year-old and was tipped for big things by Wenger – but sadly never reached his mooted potential while with the Gunners and was subsequently loaned out four times before being sold to Sociedad in 2012.

He scored just 11 times during his time in North London an often was forced to play out wide.

However it seems that Wenger has seen him as a potential option to provide competition to Olivier Giroud without spending a fortune.
