Cristiano Ronaldo hands Portugal fitness boost
Cristiano Ronaldo returned to make an instant impact for Portugal as the Real Madrid star helped to tear into Ireland and finish their World cup preparations with a 5-1 demolition, the Daily Mail is reporting.
Ronaldo has been out of action since Madrid won the Champions League final after he was found to be suffering with tendinitis in his knee, but was fit enough to start his nation’s final warm up game - although his knee was strapped up.
It took just 52 seconds for the Portuguese star man to arrow a shot on target after tearing through the Irish defence, a sign of things to come.
On the night he pitched in with one assist, while hitting the post and going close a further two times before being taken off as a precaution on the hour mark – showing enough of his fitness that he will be ready for Portugal’s opening game against Germany.
There were a few moments to flinch for the travelling Portugal fans who would have winced in seeing Ronaldo on the end of a handful of hefty Irish challenges, but he came through unscathed to their relief.
