Del Bosque content with Spain experience

Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque feels he has a stable team ahead of Spain’s defence of the World Cup, according to Sky Sports. The Spaniards face the Netherlands in their opening game of the tournament – a repeat of the final they won four years ago.

The current squad selected by Del Bosque contains 16 of the 24 players who were victorious in extra time back in South Africa in 2010, where they beat the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time.

While this poses the risk of using an aging squad, with many approaching the end of their international careers, the coach is confident and happy in the side’s ability to gun for the trophy that would see them claim a fourth major competition in a row – a feat matched by no other nation.

Del Bosque said: “In the past, Spain has had a tendency to come into each game with new players: now we have a core of regular players, some of whom get more playing time than others, but it is a stable team.

“The new players have to earn their place. As a manager, I have to be careful with this, not to rush to introduce new players but also not to stem the tide altogether.”

Del Bosque refuted suggestions that the divide between Barcelona and Real Madrid continued to surface when the squad got together, claiming that once the Spanish jersey is pulled on all other ties are forgotten.

Spain also face Chile and Australia in a group they will be expected to emerge from as they look to secure their second World Cup after winning the first in their history four years ago.
