Man City’s Toure a doubt for Ivory Coast World Cup opener

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is a doubt for Ivory Coast’s World Cup opener with Japan, ESPN has reported.

Toure had surgery last month - although the reason isn’t known - and hasn’t taken a full part in training since. He was late joining his country’s World Cup training camp and didn’t play in either of the pre-tournament friendlies, against fellow World Cup participants Bosnia and Herzegovina and El Salvador.

Ivory Coast Head Coach Sabri Lamouchi has said he is hopeful of being able to call on Toure for the opening round of Group C games, but it’s understood to be far from guaranteed the ex-Barcelona man will be available.

Toure last season helped City to a second Premier League title in three years, seeing off the challenge of Liverpool to finish two points clear of the Reds, but the end of his campaign was disrupted with a thigh injury. Toure did nevertheless recover to feature in City’s final four matches, scoring against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, two of his 24 goals in 2013-14.
