Manchester United and England forward Wayne Rooney has claimed that Paul Scholes upset many people at Old Trafford when making negative comments about his former teammate, BBC Sport has reported.

In May, Scholes, who retired in 2013, told of his belief that the 28-year-old Rooney was past his peak, and that he would not be capable of producing his best form at the World Cup. He also questioned whether the England staff would be brave enough to drop him from the starting XI.

Rooney is expected to start for England on Saturday when they take on Italy in Manaus for what is their opening Group D game. In February, he signed a new long-term deal with Man Utd, and on Wednesday he offered a defiant response to Scholes’ criticism.

"I'm sure he's upset a lot of people at United because they see me as worthy of signing a new deal," he said. "They have obviously got a different opinion to Paul but you will have to ask him about that.

"He's been a great player at Manchester United but I've never had his phone number and he's never had mine. It was a bit strange, I'll be honest. He has his opinions and he's entitled to them. He's probably the best player I've ever played with, so I'm not going to knock him as a player, but I don't agree with his point."
