Arsenal target Vela hoping for Real Sociedad stay
Real Sociedad president Jokin Apparibay has said that striker Carlos Vela would prefer to stay at the club rather than make a return to Arsenal, Sky Sports has reported.
Arsenal look set to complete a deal for Vela in the coming days, with Apparibay in London to negotiate with the Gunners, who still own 50% of the 25-year-old’s rights. They are now exercising the buy-back option they included in the deal which took him to Spain back in 2012.
However, Apparibay has stated that Vela is unwilling to return to the Emirates Stadium, where he struggled for first-team opportunities over his four-year stay, making 62 appearances, many of which came from the bench. "We are fortunate that the player is keen to stay in San Sebastian with us and that's an important factor for Real Sociedad," Apparibay said.
Vela has now attracted interest from his former club after scoring 16 goals for Real Sociedad last season, taking his tally for the club to an impressive 47 from his 126 outings. He is currently in Brazil ahead of Mexico’s opening World Cup Group A match against Cameroon on Friday.
