Aleksandar Kolarov has signed an extension to his Manchester City contract which will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2018, The Guardian have confirmed.

Aleksandar Kolarov

Serbian full back Kolarov was a vital part of Manuel Pellegrini’s team last season, making 30 appearances as the Blues collected their second Premier League trophy in the last three years.

The 28-year-old joined City for £19 million in 2010 following a successful spell in Italy with Lazio, and has established himself as a regular on the left side of defence despite challenges from the likes of Gael Clichy. He also notably scored the vital equalising penalty in the Allianz Arena as City defeated Bayern Munich 3-2 to progress to the knock-out stages of the Champions League last season.

Kolarov had a year left on his current deal, but City demonstrated their desire to hold on to the Serbian international by offering this three-year extension.

He expressed his happiness at signing the new contract, telling the club’s official website: “I am very happy and very proud of this new contract. I will give to this club probably the best stages of my football career and I am very happy that I continue with this club which feels now like my home.”

Kolarov made his senior bow in his native Serbia with Čukarički, where he also represented OFK Beograd before moving to Italy and then England.
