Southampton are set to appoint experienced Dutchman Ronald Koeman as their new manager, as their search for Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement nears its end, according to Sky Sports.

Pochettino left for Tottenham towards the end of May having led the club for 16 hugely successful months, securing a top half finish and their highest Premier League points tally last season. Since the Argentine announced his decision to move on, Koeman has been the clear favourite to take charge.

In recent days Saints executive director Les Reed said that the club were close to making a high-profile appointment, suggesting that Koeman would be the new boss at the St. Mary’s Stadium.

The 51-year-old left Feyenoord last season after guiding them to an impressive second place in the Eredivisie. He has also managed in Spain and Portugal, earning a great amount of respect across Europe.

Koeman’s first job is likely to be to convince the likes of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Luke Shaw to stay at the club beyond this summer. The trio, who are all taking part in the World Cup, have been linked with moves away, and have all been said to want to leave Southampton.
