Vermaelen agrees to join Man Utd
Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen looks set to move to rivals Manchester United this summer after agreeing a deal in principle with the Old Trafford club, according to the Daily Telegraph.
New manager Louis van Gaal is set to initiate an overhaul of the Man Utd playing staff this summer, and the club are in the market for a new defender after seeing the experienced Nemanja Vidic head for Inter, and deciding not to offer a new contract to Rio Ferdinand.
Vermaelen has been at Arsenal for five years, and was awarded the captaincy in the summer of 2011 when Cesc Fabregas left for Barcelona. However, since the latter part of the 2012-13 season, he has lost his place in the team due to a successful partnership being forged between Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
It is now up to Man Utd to agree a fee with Arsenal for the Belgium international, who still has a year left to run on his current contract. The player is looking to move to the Red Devils, but any deal will have to wait until after the World Cup to be completed.
