Croatia plan media boycott

Monday 16 June 2014

Croatia’s playing squad are set to enforce a media boycott for the foreseeable future at this World Cup after photographers hid in nearby bushes to snap players bathing nude, the Guardian is reporting.

Photos of the Croatia team were then published online for all to see and has triggered the players to self impose a silence to all forms of the media.

And coach Niko Kovac – who has reacted with calm authority over the matter so far – has said he will not be forcing any of his players to break this silence and does not know when it will end, telling the media that they had ‘blew it’.

Kovac said: “I can’t force them to be at your disposal after what you have done to them and their families.

"They are adamant that they won’t speak to you lot any more and I don’t know whether the silence will end tomorrow or last until the end of our World Cup campaign.

"I respect my players’ opinion and I also know that you have done a very professional job so far but you blew it with this one.”

Croatia lost their opening match 3-1 to hosts Brazil in controversial circumstances after a contentious penalty was awarded to give the hosts the lead after going behind – with supposed offender Dejan Lovren calling for the officials to be banned after awarding the spot kick.

They next face Cameroon and will hope to regain control of their own World cup fate with a win, after Mexico also came away from their first game with three points.
