Former Tottenham Hotspur Coach Tim Sherwood has explained to talkSport why he turned down the chance to fill the vacancy at West Bromwich Albion.

Alan Irvine was announced as the Baggies’ new Head Coach, replacing Pepe Mel, but Sherwood had been in talks with West Brom and was thought to be close to agreeing terms with the club.

The former England midfielder was sacked by Spurs at the end of the season, replaced by Mauricio Pochettino, and confirmed the negotiations but said it didn’t feel like a good fit for him. “I went to speak to the chairman and the board there a couple of times and was happy with how the discussions were going,” Sherwood said. “I was offered the job before we started to negotiate. It just wasn't right for me in the end, so I decided to give it a miss.

“It is a fantastic club and it looked on the outside like it might be a perfect fit for me, but unfortunately we couldn’t agree for me to move forward. I wish them all the best and Alan in particular, someone I played with a long time ago at Blackburn.”

Irvine has previously been in charge of Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday, having been assistant to David Moyes at Preston and Everton before moving into management in his own right. He returned to Goodison Park as academy manager and also played for the Toffees between 1981 and 1984.
