Sunderland have signed goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon on a free transfer, after Manchester City decided not to renew his contract upon its expiry, the Guardian has reported.

The Romanian, who spent almost his entire time at the Etihad Stadium acting as cover to first choice stopper Joe Hart, joins former Wigan Athletic midfielder Jordi Gomez in moving to Wearside this summer, and he has signed a four year contract.

With Kieren Westwood having left and ex-Argentina World Cup goalkeeper Oscar Ustari’s future hanging in the balance, Pantilimon is expected to compete with Vito Mannone for a regular place in the Sunderland goal.

Upon making the move from Man City, where he made just 29 appearances over two seasons, Pantilimon was delighted to move to the North East. He said: “It is a great privilege and honour to join a club like Sunderland. They have an amazing history and tradition and, of course, passionate fans.

“When I left Manchester City it was important that I chose a club with good ambition and a manager who has the hunger and desire to take the team forward. After speaking with the boss, I knew this was the right place and he was the right man. I can’t wait to start.”
