Portugal boss Bento criticises referee after Germany defeat

Portugal manager Paulo Bento has heavily criticised referee Milorad Mazic after he saw his side thrashed 4-0 by Germany in their opening World Cup Group G match, Sky Sports has reported.

The Germans dominated from start to finish, and they went ahead midway through the first half when Joao Pereira brought down Mario Gotze, and Thomas Muller converted the resulting penalty. Defender Mats Hummels then made it 2-0 when he headed powerfully home from a corner.

The game was put beyond Portugal soon after when Pepe was sent off for his part in an altercation with Muller, head-butting the striker as he lay on the floor. Muller later completed his hat-trick with two more close range strikes, ensuring a miserable afternoon for the side ranked fourth in the world.

After the game, Bento suggested that Mazic had been biased towards Germany. He said: "These were the two things that seemed to show bias and they were both decisive. The penalty was forced and I don't know if (Pepe) was sent off because of his reputation. I'm not saying it was the referee's fault only. We did make mistakes, not only in our defence but also in the sharpness of our attack."
