Chelsea in pole position to win Kroos race
Toni Kroos appears more likely to join Chelsea than Real Madrid after the Spanish giants admitted they could not match Chelsea’s offer, according to The Daily Star.
The 24-year-old midfielder has a year remaining on his current contract with German champions Bayern Munich, but has rejected their offer of a new deal.
Bayern have told Kroos that they will not improve on their existing offer, and it seems the Germans would prefer to sell him now rather than let him walk away from the Allianz Arena for free when his contract expires next summer.
It is reported that Real Madrid offered Kroos terms worth £4 million per season, but Chelsea are set to offer a deal of closer to £7 million annually, a price that Real are unwilling to pay.
Manchester United had also been reported to have an interest in bringing Kroos to the Premier League, but it is said that their attentions have now turned to his fellow Bayern midfielder, Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Kroos played an important role in Bayern’s record breaking campaign, and is a regular in Joachim Löw’s national team. He played the full 90 minutes as Germany destroyed Portugal 4-0 in their opening World Cup match, claiming the assist for the second goal as Mats Hummels headed in from his corner.
