Russia Coach Fabio Capello has praised his players for taking a draw from their World Cup Group H match with South Korea despite goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev’s error, Sky Sports has reported.

Akinfeev let a long-range shot from Lee Keun-ho through his hands to put South Korea in front but substitute Aleksandr Kerzhakov equalised minutes after coming on. Capello admitted that the team were hurt by conceding the first goal, but was very happy to see the reply.

“It was a good game, they ran a lot in the first half, but then they were tired,” Capello said. “The goal they scored, it was not easy. But the reaction from the players was really good.

“This is really important for me, the reaction, and we had chances to score the second goal,” Capello added. “I know Kherzhakov very well, he is a fantastic player and he always gives us a chance to score goals.

“Just like some players can miss penalties it can happen that a keeper makes a mistake as well. You can accept a mistake from a great keeper like Akinfeev. Today it turned out fine.”

Capello previously took England to World Cup 2010, helping the Three Lions out of the group stage only for Germany to win 4-1 in the first knockout round.

Russia next play Belgium, who beat Algeria 2-1 after going a goal down to a Sofiane Feghouli penalty.
