Vertonghen blames Man Utd for Fellaini form

Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen has said that Marouane Fellaini’s struggles since joining Manchester United are entirely of the club’s making, Sky Sports has reported.

Marouane Fellaini

Having been signed from Everton last summer for a fee of £27.5m, Fellaini found it difficult to make an impression at Old Trafford, failing to score in his first season at the club and sometimes acting as a scapegoat for supporters disgruntled by their team’s form.

So far in his time as a Man Utd player, Fellaini has not been played in his favoured role just behind the lone striker, instead playing in an orthodox central midfield position. He was played further forward after coming on as a substitute for Belgium in their World Cup opener against Algeria on Tuesday, and scored the equaliser as they came from behind to win.

And this has led to Tottenham star Vertonghen criticising Man Utd for their use of Fellaini. He said: “Marouane always is very important for the Belgian team. I know there has been a lot of pressure on him from the fans in England, but in Belgium he always does well and scores goals.

“I’m very pleased for him and I gave him a little hug after the game because I know that goal meant a lot to him. We know how to use him and I don’t know whether they do in his other team.”

absolute crap. Fellaini himself said he would prefer a defensive midfield role. Moyes played him there (when he wasn't injured) and now because he scores 1 goal, Utd are accused of playing him too deep. which is it then?
