Coach Volker Finke is determined to find out why Benoit Assou-Ekotto attacked Cameroon team mate Benjamin Moukandjo during their World Cup defeat to Croatia, BBC Sport reports.

The incident came at the end of what was a torrid night for the Indomitable Lions, as they crashed out of the tournament in disappointing fashion after just two games.

After exchanging words, full back Assou-Ekotto aimed a headbutt at his compatriot. It is reported that the pair attempted to continue the dispute as they left the field at full time, only for striker Samuel Eto’o to step between them in the tunnel.

Said Finke: "It's unimaginable. I saw this happen and I need to find out exactly what happened, why exactly these two players exploded. I hate to see that. It's not the image of Cameroon I want to project."

Assou-Ekotto, 26, plays in England for Tottenham, but spent last season on loan at fellow London side Queens Park Rangers in the Championship as they won promotion back to the Premier League. However, his time there ended on an unsavoury note too: he missed the end of the campaign after being sent off in a match against eventual champions Leicester City.

The clash between Assou-Ekotto and Moukandjo was not the first incident of ill-discipline of the night for the west African nation, after midfielder Alex Song received a red card in the first half after aiming a punch at Croatia’s double goalscorer Mario Mandzukic.

Cameroon eventually surrendered 4-0, and now only have pride to play for when they face hosts Brazil in their final match.
