Chelsea have commissioned to investigate the possibility of expanding the capacity of their Stamford Bridge home, and The Daily Mail have reported that fans are happy with the announcement.

With a current total of 41,837 seats, the west London ground is only the eighth largest in the Premier League, putting Chelsea behind the likes of Aston Villa, Sunderland and Newcastle in terms of stadium size.

But now owner Roman Abramovich has commissioned a report to look into the feasibility of expanding the capacity to bring it closer to their rivals at the top of the Premier League.

The site on which Stamford Bridge stands has limited space, and major obstacles such as a nearby railway line have previously thwarted plans to make the stadium larger. However, it is thought the study will include assessing the possibility of building a platform over the railway to enable further expansion.

The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust released a statement reacting to the news. They welcomed the commissioning of the study, but also noted that they hoped the fans would be consulted over any major changes to the stadium.

The statement read: “As well as engaging stakeholders such as the local community and residents groups, which is clearly essential, we urge the club to actively involve Chelsea supporters in the study (and the implementation of the study results), which is clearly of significant importance to all Chelsea supporters.”

Stamford Bridge was initially built in 1877, with Chelsea moving in following their formation in 1905. It was also used as the venue for three FA Cup finals in the 1920s, the last three before the opening of Wembley Stadium.
