Hodgson feels England can hurt Uruguay

England coach Roy Hodgson claims his teams have the right players to be successful in their crucial World Cup clash, reports The Daily Mail.

Hodgson was pleased with the way his team played against Italy in their opening game of the tournament, despite the eventual 2-1 defeat. But while he did not rule out the deployment of an attacking formation again, he exercised a little caution ahead of the Uruguay match.

“We didn’t go all-out attack against Italy and we won’t be saying that against Uruguay, either, but we do have the sort of players that are capable of hurting them,” said Hodgson. “We saw that even a top team like Italy was tested by the quality of our attacking play and we’re not going to dispense with any of those weapons.”

England’s performance against Italy drew praise for its positivity, although they ultimately fell to a 2-1 defeat thanks to a Mario Balotelli header. With Uruguay also surprisingly losing their first match, 3-1 to the unfancied Costa Ricans, the game in Sao Paolo today has taken on must-win status for both sides.

England have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the decisive encounter, although Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has still not recovered from the injury he sustained in the pre-tournament friendly with Ecuador.

However, Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez is reported to be in line for a return to action after his recent injury lay-off. Hodgson recognised the Liverpool striker’s value to his team, but insisted that England will be prepared to face his threat.

“We believe Suarez will be back and that will be a big confidence boost for their whole team,” said Hodgson. “There is no doubt Uruguay are different when Suarez is in the team. It is not as if we’re going into the unknown, though. We know how good Suarez is.”
