Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has moved to dismiss claims that he has agreed a summer move to rivals Manchester United, Goal.com has reported.

Earlier in the week, it was widely reported that Vermaelen had decided to join Man Utd after the World Cup and become one of new manager Louis van Gaal’s first signings in charge. However, he has been quick to deny the rumours, insisting he is still an Arsenal player, with one year still left on his contract.

Ahead of Belgium’s upcoming World Cup encounter with Russia at the Maracana, Vermaelen said: "I know there has been a lot of talk and a lot of rumours but the only thing I can say is that it's not true. Everybody understands my situation at Arsenal and that I have one year left. I understand that people are going to talk but I am here in Brazil and I am enjoying my time and I'm focused on what I am doing."

Man Utd are targeting defensive reinforcements this summer, with experienced duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic having left the club at the end of last season, while Alexander Buttner is set to join Russian club Dinamo Moscow.

All the rumours are being created by the newspaper and the media. Instead of them approaching the managers of the teams, they continue to find new strories to sell their newspapers.3
