Cardiff expect Medel interest after World Cup

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman expects interested parties to make offers for Chile international Gary Medel after the utility man’s performances at the World Cup, Sky Sports has reported.

Gary Medel

Medel, who played in midfield for Cardiff last season as they were relegated from the Premier League, has been at the heart of the South Americans’ defence, helping Chile to victories over Australia and Spain.

With Cardiff playing Championship football next season it has been suggested Medel will attract interest from elsewhere and could be on the move. Dalman, after praising Medel’s displays, said he believes the former Sevilla man could stay in Wales.

“I thought Gary was magnificent, man of the match against Spain. What he demonstrated yet again is that he is a quality player and one we want to keep at our club,” Dalman said. “I hope that once this tournament is over, he will choose to stick around and help us try to regain our place in the Premier League. I’ve had no indication whatsoever from Gary that he may want to go.

“People may say that Gary is too good for the Championship. But then we’ve got lots of players who are good enough to play in the Premier League,” Dalman continued. “I’ve no doubts that after what Gary has been doing in this World Cup, there will be interested parties out there.

“But he is under contract to Cardiff City and sometimes it’s not necessarily about the league you play in, it’s about the club you play for and their ambition. We’ve made six summer signings already and have set out our stall to try to regain instant promotion.”

Medel made 35 appearances for Cardiff last season without scoring, but was unable to prevent his team dropping out of the top flight, Cardiff finishing bottom with 30 points, six points from safety.
