Ferdinand to join QPR

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand is expected to sign for Premier League new boys Queens Park Rangers, ESPN has reported.

Rio Ferdinand

Ferdinand left Old Trafford at the end of the season when his contract expired, and the 35-year-old is said to be willing to take a substantial pay cut to work under Harry Redknapp. Redknapp was West Ham manager when Ferdinand came through at Upton Park, making his debut in 1996.

He later left the Hammers for Leeds after 157 appearances, the £18m fee making him the world’s most expensive teenager, and then moved on to United in 2002, winning the Premier League six times, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Champions League in his 455 games for the Red Devils.

QPR will return to the top flight next season after a year in the Championship, going up via the play-offs, beating Derby County with a late Bobby Zamora goal. Redknapp’s side finished the year in fourth place, behind Derby, 13 points and 22 points behind Burnley and Leicester City, who went up automatically.
