Man City’s Kompany ‘almost joined Barca’
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has revealed he was close to joining Barcelona on more than one occasion, ESPN has reported.
Kompany has spoken to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo and said he had almost moved to Camp Nou but insisted there were no recent talks between his camp and the Catalans. “I have been close to signing for Barca a few times, there were contacts, but recently, officially, I can assure you that there has been nothing that I know of,” he said.
“I have a contract with Manchester City,” Kompany continued. “I like it there a lot [and] we have won the Premier League. We have a very serious and attractive project. It is not in my plans to leave the club.”
Kompany has been a City player since 2008, moving to the club from Hamburg having started his career with Anderlecht. He signed a six-year contract renewal in 2013 and has twice won the title, in 2012 and 2014, as well as lifting the FA Cup in 2011.
The 28-year-old is currently playing at the World Cup with Belgium, helping the Red Devils out of the group stage with wins over Algeria and Russia.
