Arsenal reject Man Utd bid for Vermaelen
Arsenal have rejected an opening offer from Manchester United for central defender Thomas Vermaelen, as it was a long way below their asking price, according to the Daily Star.
Vermaelen has been heavily linked with Man Utd in recent weeks, with the Red Devils having made signing a defender one of their main priorities this summer after the recent departures of experienced duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
There have also been rumours that Vermaelen has been looking to leave Arsenal after struggling for regular first-team football continuously over the last year and-a-half, with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker having struck a successful partnership in central defence.
The Belgian has recently dismissed claims of a move to Old Trafford, but new Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal would be set to return with an improved offer if he does not agree terms on a new deal with Arsenal, whose manager Arsene Wenger is keen for Vermaelen to stay as defensive cover.
Should a deal take place, however, Arsenal may push for a player to included in exchange for Vermaelen, having already lost Bacary Sagna to Manchester City so far in the transfer window.
