Hitzfeld: Switzerland have nothing to lose
Switzerland manager Ottmar Hitzfeld has insisted that his side will have nothing to lose for the remainder of their World Cup campaign after they booked their place in the knockout stages, Sky Sports has reported.
Needing to better Ecuador’s result to make it through to the second round, a Xherdan Shaqiri hat-trick gave Hitzfeld’s team a 3-0 victory over Honduras in Manaus, while the 10-man South American side could only draw with group winners France at the Maracana.
Shaqiri’s first goal came after just six minutes, when he powered a blistering shot into the net from 20 yards. He made it two on the counter attack before half time before completing his treble in the second period with another composed finish.
After the game, Hitzfeld had praise for Shaqiri, saying: "As a coach, after losing 5-2 to France you know it's important to stay calm. I made the most of our strengths. Xherdan Shaqiri is a player who can make the difference because he can decide games on his own.
"Even against France, he played very well. I put him as a number 10 today and that paid off. We've got nothing left to lose so things can only get better for us."
Switzerland take on heavily fancied Argentina in the second round on Tuesday as they look to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 60 years.
