Man Utd see Herrera offer rejected
Manchester United have seen their £29m bid for Athletic Bilbao playmaker Ander Herrera rejected, but are still confident of completing a deal for the 24-year-old, BBC Sport is reporting.
The offer did meet Herrera’s release clause, but the Spanish club are unwilling to part company with their key player, who has scored 11 goals in contributed 20 assists in his 128 appearances over three years with the club.
The Red Devils missed out on Herrera last summer after failing to meet the buyout clause, but new boss Louis van Gaal has revived the deal, giving the go-ahead for the club to return to this pursuit. Herrera has reportedly been in England to complete a medical with the club in recent days, only for Bilbao to reveal their reluctance to sell a home-grown player.
A statement from La Liga’s fourth-placed team read: : "Athletic want to announce that they have this week rejected an offer from Manchester United, of around 36m euros (£28.85million), for the transfer of the economic and federative rights of the player Ander Herrera."
Despite the setback, Man Utd still believe that they can secure the services of Herrera over the coming days and weeks, with the midfielder still expected to become van Gaal’s first signing since taking over at Old Trafford.
