Man City announce stadium expansion plans

The Premier League champions have announced plans to expand the capacity of their Manchester home, according to Sky Sports.

Etihad Stadium

Work is currently in progress that will see 6,000 seats added to the South Stand, with the new project set to add three rows of new seating at pitchside level.

The Etihad Stadium as it is known, currently has seating for around 47,800 fans, still some way short of their local rivals Manchester United whose Old Trafford home boasts almost 76,000 seats.

But these current expansion projects would boost the City of Manchester Stadium’s capacity to over 55,000, meaning that only United and Arsenal would have bigger stadiums in the Premier League.

The club reiterated their commitment to establishing strong bonds with their supporters.

"We have always been committed to bringing fans closer to Manchester City, to the players and to the pitch,” said Tom Glick, City's chief commercial officer. "Whether that's through digital innovation, community work, international tours, or as in this case, physically allowing fans to be right next to the action, it is our top priority.”

The current expansion initiatives are on track to be completed in time for the start of the 2015/16 season. Further improvements could also follow in the future, as City have planning permission for another 6,000-seat project should they wish to carry it out.

City have played at the Etihad Stadium since 2003, after spending 80 years at their former home, the iconic Maine Road stadium.
