Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has welcomed the arrival of Ander Herrera after the signing of the Athletic Bilbao midfielder was confirmed on the club’s official website.

United have triggered the buyout clause in Herrera’s Athletic contract and the player will sign a four-year deal, subject to international clearance. Giggs said Herrera is a player who can contribute to United’s present and future. “Ander is a fantastic young player, with great energy and creativity. We believe him to be one of the brightest young prospects in Spain and I am certain he will be a big hit with the United fans,” Giggs said.

“I’m delighted he has made the decision to come to Manchester and play his part in the club’s future. I’m looking forward to seeing him in action on our summer tour to America,” the former winger added.

The 24-year-old Herrera made more than 100 appearances for the Basque club, helping Ernesto Valverde’s side to fourth place in last year’s La Liga table. He previously played for Real Zaragoza, moving to San Mames in July 2011.
