Aston Villa are set to appoint former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane as their new assistant manager by the beginning of July, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Keane is currently assistant to Martin O’Neill at the Republic of Ireland national team, and will still hold that position should he join the troubled West Midlands side, combining the two roles.

Having pulled out of the running to become the new manager of Celtic, Keane is willing to move to Villa Park despite the uncertainty surrounding the club at present, with owner Randy Lerner having so far failed to find a suitable buyer for the club since putting it up for sale in May.

As a result, Villa are only able to sign players on free transfers, and are widely tipped to struggle in the Premier League next season. So far this summer, they have brought in experienced duo Joe Cole and Philippe Senderos after they left West Ham United and Valencia respectively.

The deal is likely to be completed before the Villa squad is due to report back for pre-season training on July 7. The club has been looking for a new assistant manager since April, when previous incumbent Ian Culverhouse was suspended and then dismissed by the club along with coach Gary Karsa.
