Disgraced Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez has issued a contrite apology over the bite incident at the World Cup which has seen him receive a lengthy ban, The Daily Star reports.

Luis Suarez

The Liverpool forward was sanctioned for biting Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder during the final group stage match between Uruguay and Italy. The incident, missed by the referee at the time, was reviewed by a disciplinary committee using video evidence. Suarez was found guilty and hit with a suspension of nine international games and a four-month ban from any football-related activity.

After initially denying that any wrong-doing took place, with indignant support being offered by his angry team mates and national management, Suarez has now admitted the charge and apologised to Chiellini and “the entire football family”.

The 27-year-old, who published the statement via his Twitter account, also acknowledged the possible confusion caused by the conflicting statements that initially protested his innocence.

He also promised there would be no repeat of the incident, saying: “I vow to the public that there will never be another incident like this involving me."

While Suarez is banned from playing, training, or even entering any football stadium for the next four months, he is not prohibited from transferring between clubs, and rumours persist that he may become a Barcelona player before the start of the season.
