Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is to spend six months in Australia ahead of a move to the MLS, according to The Daily Mail.

The England international’s contract at Stamford Bridge officially expired this week and as such he is now a free agent. He is rumoured to have been approached by several other Premier League teams, but it appears he now favours a move abroad.

It has been reported that he has agreed a deal to join New York City, the American club owned by Manchester City’s parent company. But the MLS season does not begin until March next year, and sources claim that Lampard will spend the period until then in Australia with Melbourne City, who are also affiliated with the more illustrious Manchester club.

The 36-year-old midfielder would not be the first star name to make such a series of moves this year. Spanish international David Villa confirmed in June that he was leaving Atletico Madrid for New York, with a six-month stop in Melbourne along the way.

Lampard enjoyed a glittering 13-year stay with Chelsea after joining from West Ham United in 2001, making well over 400 appearances and winning three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, a Champions League and a Europa League.

He has also represented England 106 times, putting him in sixth place in the all-time appearances list alongside fellow midfield legend Bobby Charlton. Lampard captained England in their final game at this year’s World Cup against Costa Rica, a match widely expected to be his international swansong.
