Newcastle seal deal for Ajax star

Newcastle United have completed the transfer of Ajax star Siem De Jong on a long term contract, the BBC has reported.

The 25-year-old Netherlands international has joined St James’ Park on a six year deal for an undisclosed fee, with manager Alan Pardew delighted to have sealed his signature.

Pardew said: “Siem will give us intelligence in the final third and create goal scoring situations. It is a big signing for this club.”

Brother Luuk was on loan at the club for the second half of the season but failed to make a significant impact – and fans will be hoping brother Siem will fair better.

De Jong progressed through the Ajax youth ranks before making his debut in 2007, and had captained the side since 2012 – helping to lead them to four consecutive Eredivisie titles.

The Dutchman can play as an attacking midfielder or as a striker, and is seen as a quality replacement for the likes of Loic Remy and Shola Ameobi, who have left the club incredibly short upfront.

Of the move De Jong said: “I had been at Ajax a long time and wanted a new challenge in a new environment and a new country.

“Coming to Newcastle is a great opportunity and the chance to play for a club like this in the Premier League was one I could not turn down.”

He also revealed he had spoken to his brother about the club and could not wait to start.
