Ex-Greece Coach Santos hits out at players
Fernando Santos has criticised some of the members of the Greece squad he took to the World Cup, the Guardian has reported.
Greece were eliminated from the Round of 16 by Costa Rica, losing to the Central Americans on penalties despite Costa Rica playing the last hour of the match with 10 men. Santos has been reported as saying that Greece would have won the match if his players had been less interested in themselves.
“We had two or three players more interested in being remembered as the man to score a historic goal for Greece,” Santos said. “It concerned them more to score than the correct circulation of the ball, leading to many mistakes and us losing possession.”
Santos’ contract as Greece Coach expired at the start of the week, the day after Greece’s elimination from the tournament, with Claudio Ranieri linked with the vacancy. Portuguese Santos has previously coached Porto, Panathinaikos, AEK Athens and Benfica, among others, in his career, having led the Greece national team since 2010.
