Carvalho will cost Man Utd £37m, say Sporting
Sporting Lisbon are prepared to allow defensive midfielder William Carvalho to move to Manchester United, but only if the Old Trafford club meet his £37m buyout clause, the Daily Express is reporting.
Man Utd have been in talks with the Portuguese club over a move for the 22-year-old in recent days, a player that new manager Louis van Gaal sees as a midfield partner for recent signing Ander Herrera, as he looks to overhaul the club’s midfield.
Premier League rivals Chelsea are also said to be interested, with an offer of £11m having reportedly been offered along with a player on loan, but Man Utd look to be in pole position due to their previous links with Sporting, from whom they signed Cristiano Ronaldo in 2003 and Nani in 2007.
But Sporting will only allow Carvalho to leave if the release clause is met, and director Augusto Ignacio said: "It's not like the old days when players left Sporting at any price. We are not concerned with William Carvalho because we have alternatives, who will want to play as well. The termination clause ensures a great deal to Sporting. I am very pleased with the negotiations.’
Carvalho, who can also play in central defence, has been at Sporting for three years, but only established himself in the first team last season after spending time on loan in Belgium with Cercle Brugge. He scored four goals in 34 outings in 2013-14.
