Arsenal make contact with Newcastle for Debuchy
Arsenal have opened talks with Newcastle United over the prospect of signing France’s World Cup right-back Mathieu Debuchy, Sky Sports has reported.
The Gunners are looking to replace Bacary Sagna, who rejected the offer of a new contract to stay at the Emirates Stadium and instead signed for Premier League champions Manchester City.
Debuchy is understood to be keen to play in the Champions League and Arsenal can offer the chance to feature in the competition next season, having finished fourth in the table. But any move is unlikely to go through while Les Bleus remain in the World Cup.
France play Germany in the tournament’s quarter-finals on Friday, with the winners going into the final four. Brazil meet Colombia on the same day, while Saturday sees the Netherlands meet Costa Rica and Belgium face Argentina.
Debuchy has been a Newcastle player since January 2013, moving to Tyneside from Lille, where he won the Ligue 1 title.
Should Debuchy head to London then Newcastle could look to Manchester City’s Micah Richards to replace him, the report adds.
