Reina to remain at Liverpool
After weeks of transfer speculation, Sky Sports has reported that goalkeeper Pepe Reina will stay at Liverpool at least for the upcoming season.
The 31-year-old spent the 2013/14 season on loan at Napoli, and rumours were rife that he would stay longer with the Italians, or possibly seek a return home to his native Spain with the likes of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona said to be interested.
However, Reina’s agent Manuel Garcia Quillon has now confirmed that the Spanish international will return to fight for his place in the team at Anfield.
"I know rumours are circulating about Reina’s future. But I can confirm that next season Pepe will play for Liverpool. Reina will respect his deal with the English side," said Quillon.
Reina excelled for Napoli last season, making 40 appearances in all competitions as the Azzurri finished third in Serie A, securing a place in the Champions League qualifying rounds, and won the Coppa Italia.
Thoughts of an extended stay on the coast of Campania were crushed when boss Rafael Benitez, who had also previously managed Reina at Liverpool, admitted that Napoli could not afford to match Reina’s high wage demands.
Reina, who has made over 350 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool since joining from Villareal in 2005, lost his place in the side after Brendan Rodgers brought in Belgian international Simon Mingolet from Sunderland last summer.
