Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is said to be confident of beating Liverpool to the signing of Barcelona’s Chile international Alexis Sanchez, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

It’s said that Sanchez’s representatives have held talks with the Reds but the player still prefers a move to London and the Gunners have reached an agreement in principle with the former Udinese forward.

Barca would prefer Sanchez to go to Liverpool in an effort to aide their move for Luis Suarez and the Spanish side haven’t agreed terms with Arsenal. A £22m fee is said to have been offered to Barca but it’s expected to take more than £25m to push the move through.

Wenger has yet to make any summer signings but is thought to have a transfer kitty of £100m, with the Telegraph speculating that Sanchez is well within the boss’ price range.

Sanchez featured for Chile in the World Cup, helping Jorge Sampaoli’s side to the Round of 16 with wins over Australia and Spain before a penalty shootout exit against hosts Brazil.
