Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini has rejected the suggestion that he is facing a fight to save his career at Manchester United under new manager Louis van Gaal, ESPN has reported.

It’s been claimed that van Gaal doesn’t believe Fellaini is of a high enough standard to be at Old Trafford, the former Everton player making the move from Goodison Park last summer, signed by van Gaal’s predecessor David Moyes.

Moyes paid his old club £27,5m for Fellaini but a series of injuries and poor performances led to some observers questioning Fellaini’s suitability for the deposed Premier League champions. United finished Fellaini’s first season at the club in seventh place, with Moyes sacked in April.

Van Gaal will take over for the new season once the Netherlands’ involvement in the World Cup is over and it was rumoured that he has earmarked Fellaini for a move away for the club. When asked about his future, Fellaini replied it will be decided in due course, but he doesn’t feel he has to show anyone anything.

“We will see after the World Cup,” Fellaini said. “I don't have to prove [anything]. I've been a professional footballer for eight years.”

Belgium are through to the World Cup quarter-finals and will play Argentina on Saturday. Fellaini scored in the group game against Algeria after coming on as a substitute, having failed to score all season for United. His last club goal came for Everton against Stevenage in the League Cup.
