Liverpool’s new signing Emre Can believes the Premier League runners-up can be as successful in the Champions League as Bayern Munich, ESPN has reported.

Emre Can

Can was yesterday confirmed as a Liverpool player after completing a £10m move from Bayer Leverkusen, having started his career in Bavaria before switching to the BayArena in the summer of 2013.

He now expects the Reds to thrive in Europe next season, revealing he was impressed by Liverpool’s attempt to win the title last year. “I believe Liverpool can be on a similar level to Bayern Munich next season,” Can said. “We came second in last year's Premier League, the best league in the world, so we don't have to hide from anybody.

“We simply need to believe in ourselves and I am very optimistic that we will go far in the Champions League,” the midfielder continued. “I hope we will progress as far as we can and I am looking to competing against the best teams in Europe. I believe we will play a good role in next year's competition.”

Can added that he hopes to help his new club claim their first title since 1991 after they were pipped to the post by Manchester City. “I want to be a Premier League champion next season. Yes, I believe we can go one better,” he went on. “We will give it our best in order to finish on top of the table.”

The 20-year-old made 39 appearances for Leverkusen last season and played half-a-dozen games for Bayern’s senior side before making the move. Can is Liverpool’s third signing of the summer, after the purchases of Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana.
