Brazil striker Neymar has been ruled out for the rest of the World Cup after he fractured a bone in his back during Friday’s quarter-final win over Colombia, BBC Sport has reported.

The hosts’ star man went down under a challenge from Juan Zuniga in the late stages of the game in Fortaleza, which went unpunished by the referee. The 22-year-old was then stretchered off in tears before being taken to hospital, with the injury set to keep him out of action for a few weeks.

There is was confirmed that he had fractured a vertebrae in his spine, and manager Luiz Felipe Scolari believed that it has come as a result of opposition teams targeting Neymar. He said: "Neymar was going to be hunted. For three matches that has been happening."

Brazilian team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar added: "Unfortunately, he's not going to be able to play. He is very, very sad. It's not serious in the sense that it doesn't need surgery, but he'll need to immobilise it to recover."

Goals from the central defensive duo of Thiago Silva and David Luiz was enough to send Brazil into the semi-finals, where they will play Germany, with a late James Rodriguez penalty proving to be a mere consolation. However, Silva will miss the semi-final along with Neymar duo to suspension.
