Swansea City captain Ashley Williams has signed a new four year contract with the club, ending rumours that he could leave this summer, Sky Sports has reported.

Talks over a new contract had stalled in recent months, leading to fears from the Swans that he could leave for free when his existing contract expired at the end of next season. Sunderland had also registered an interest, and are believed to have had several bids rejected for the 29-year-old.

Williams has now committed his future until 2018, and should he see it out it would complete a decade at the Liberty Stadium for the player, who joined from Stockport County in 2008 after an initial loan spell. Since then, he has helped Swansea reach the Premier League, establish themselves there, and win their first major trophy.

After signing the new deal, Williams said: “I’m delighted to sign a new contract at Swansea City. I’ve enjoyed fantastic success at this club and I want to keep helping Swansea City progress.

"There seems to a lot of talk every summer but I was quite relaxed. I always knew where I wanted to be. It was just a matter of working things out. I've been here six years and this is home to me I didn't want to go anywhere else. I'm happy, I know Swansea and they know me. I'm just pleased to get it all sorted so early in the pre-season so I can just get my head down and kick on."
