Chelsea emerge as contenders for Kroos

After reports emerged that Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos could be on his way to Real Madrid, Chelsea are thought to be launching a last ditch attempt to land the star, the Daily Star is reporting.

Madrid were believed to have agreed a fee with the Germany playmaker and closing in on his signature after his World Cup duties had finished – but now Chelsea hope to hijack a rumoured £25m move.

It was thought that Kroos already rejected a switch to Manchester United after they failed to qualify for the Champions League, while discussions with Munich over a new deal fell through with the club unwilling to match his wage demands.

Both Chelsea and Madrid can offer the wages alongside Champions League football and it could now be a two horse race for the player.

Speaking about his future, Kroos refused to be drawn on speculation while Germany remained in the World Cup – they are through to the semi finals where they face Brazil.

He said: “During the World Cup there will be no decision or information.

“I don't want to be distracted.”

Kroos has made 205 appearances for his boyhood club to date, scoring 26 goals, and played a main role as the Bayern won the Bundesliga in record time.
