Sunderland target Man City midfielder Rodwell

Sunderland are eyeing a move for out of favour Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell, as the 23-year-old looks for regular first-team football, according to the Daily Mail.

Jack Rodwell

The Black Cats are looking to bolster their midfield this summer, having already lost Jack Colback to rivals Newcastle United and Craig Gardner to West Bromwich Albion, while Ki Sung-Yueng has returned to parent club Swansea City, and they believe former Everton star Rodwell is a crucial target.

Roberto Mancini brought Rodwell to Manchester from Goodison Park in the summer of 2012, but has struggled to make an impact and challenge the likes of Fernandinho, Javi Garcia and Yaya Toure for a place in the starting line-up. Overall he has made just 26 appearances in two seasons, scoring twice.

Capped by England three times, Rodwell has also had a difficult time with injuries while at the Etihad Stadium, but Man City could be willing to offload him this summer, particularly after more midfield competition was added in the shape of former FC Porto man Fernando. Sunderland will be confident of pulling off the deal, but he could cost in excess of £10m.
